United Announces May Schedule and New Leisure Routes

United Airlines has announced its May schedule, including the addition of 26 new leisure routes to destinations across the United States. The new routes are mainly point-to-point and are focused on connecting Midwest markets to areas in the South and New England. Along with the new routes, United will resume over 20 suspended domestic routes as demand is expected to grow with the start of the summer travel season.

The cities of Charleston, S.C.; Hilton Head, S.C.; Myrtle Beach, S.C.; Pensacola, Fla.; and Portland, Maine will all see increased service from up to seven new Midwest destinations. Cleveland, Ohio; Cincinnati, Ohio; Columbus, Ohio; St. Louis, MO.; Pittsburgh, PA.; Milwaukee, Wis.; and Indianapolis, Ind will see the greatest increase in destinations served due to the new announcement.

New flights will begin on May 27 and be served multiple times weekly depending on the route. All flights are currently to run on a seasonal basis, with service ending on Labor Day weekend in early September.

All flights will be operated for United Express by GoJet Airlines and be flown by the CRJ-550. Unlike other 50 seat aircraft, the CRJ-550 features multiple cabins and allows customers to bring roller bags on board. The CRJ-550 features 50 seats, including 10 first-class seats, 20 Economy Plus seats, and 20 standard economy seats. United initially launched in 2019 as a way to comply with pilot contract scope clauses and to also offer travelers a better on-board experience on routes normally operated by 50 seat aircraft.

In a press release from the airline, Ankit Gupta, VP of United’s domestic network planning and scheduling, said, “In the past few weeks, we have seen the strongest flight bookings since the start of the pandemic. As we rebuild our schedule to meet that demand, adding in seasonal point-to-point flying is just one of the ways we are finding opportunities to add new and exciting service.”

Along with the new CRJ-550 routes, the airline is also starting flights between Houston and Kalispell, Mont.; Washington Dulles International Airport and Bozeman Mont.; and Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport and Nantucket, Mass. The carrier also will start its previously announced flights between Santa Ana, Calif., and Honolulu.

Overall, United will serve 52% of its schedule when compared to May 2019, an increase from the lowly 14% seen in 22020.
