Wizz Eyes Expansion With Nine New Sarajevo Routes

Must read

Wizz Air has announced the launch of its 41st base, this time in the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sarajevo. The announcement follows a tender that Sarajevo launched to attract a new airline there. The base will open in May with a single Airbus A320 aircraft and nine new routes. They will be Basel, Brussels Charleroi, Copenhagen, Dortmund, Eindhoven, Gothenburg, London Luton, Memmingen, and Paris Beauvais. None of them are currently served out of Sarajevo.

A major boost for Sarajevo Airport

Wizz Air is cementing itself as a leading airline in Bosnia and Herzegovina with the launch of its second base in the country, Sarajevo International Airport, as announced today. The airline already has a base in Tuzla but it is increasingly reducing its presence there.

These new routes will link Sarajevo to airports that serve cities with a sizeable Bosnian diaspora, and they are also mostly low-cost alternatives to nearby major airports in highly populous areas.

The new destinations, along with the route details, are listed below. They will join Wizz Air’s current single destination out of Sarajevo, Budapest.

A significant step for Bosnian aviation

Wizz Air’s announcement was a major piece of news in the regional media today. After all, Wizz air was the first airline to resume flights to Bosnia last year. It also has an established relationship with airport authorities in the country.

Commenting on the story, as reported by klix, the Operations Director of Sarajevo Airport, Nermin Zijadić, said:

“It is particularly important that these destinations are cities where there is a large diaspora of ours. This important airline introduced flights from Budapest to Sarajevo four years ago (…) which also enabled the arrival of a large number of tourists to our city. The opening of the base in Sarajevo is very significant for our Airport but also for the whole tourist sector.”

Meanwhile, Wizz Air’s Corporate Communications Manager, Andras Rado, said:

“Today’s announcement is an indicator of our commitment to Bosnia and Herzegovina and to providing affordable travel opportunities, while we stick to our health protocols that are of the highest standard. Our modern fleet, as well as the enhanced security measures, will ensure the most sanitary conditions for passengers. (…) I am certain that Wizz Air will have a positive impact on the economic development and the growth of tourism in Bosnia and Herzegovina”

It is likely that Wizz Air will develop this new base in the near future, so it will be interesting to see which destinations it launches out Sarajevo next.
