Wizz Air plans to further expand its operations from Skopje following the recent announcement of five new routes and the deployment of its sixth aircraft at the airport from late October. The airline has reached an agreement with the government for a sixth subsidised service, between Skopje and Cologne, which is expected to be scheduled shortly. This route will complement the previously announced services to Stockholm, Bari, Madrid, Larnaca and Prague. Cologne will become Wizz Air’s ninth destination in Germany from the Macedonian capital and was last operated by the airline between 2014 and October 2024. In total, Wizz Air will have launched nine new routes from Skopje in 2025 while discontinuing six.
In addition to launching new routes, Wizz Air will also increase frequencies on select services from Skopje. The low-cost carrier will add one additional weekly flight when compared to the previous winter on routes to Beauvais, Friedrichshafen, Milan Malpensa, Malta and Gothenburg, bringing each to three weekly rotations. Furthermore, an extra one to two weekly flights, depending on the month, will be introduced on services to Basel, for a total of eleven weekly, and Berlin, which will operate five times per week. On the other hand, Wizz Air will reduce frequencies on certain routes, cutting one weekly flight to both London Luton and Eindhoven, resulting in three weekly services each, and reducing operations to Nuremberg to twice weekly.
Commenting on Wizz Air’s expansion in Skopje, the General Manager of airport operator TAV Macedonia, Nejat Kurt, said, “These new routes reflect TAV Macedonia’s commitment to enhancing connectivity and expanding travel options from Skopje. Securing destinations such as Stockholm, Bari, Madrid, Prague, Cologne, and the previously announced Larnaca, particularly in new markets, has required long-term negotiations and close collaboration with airlines and the tourism sector. As the airport operator, our vision is to position Skopje Airport as a key regional hub”. He added, “With strong support from the government and the implementation of our incentive programs, we aim to attract carriers, especially those serving popular leisure destinations. These new routes create fresh opportunities for tourism, including summer holidays and city breaks, supporting sustainable passenger growth and reinforcing our presence on Europe’s tourism map. Importantly, they also contribute to increased inbound tourism, further driving long-term, sustainable traffic development”.
