Get ready to PLAY

The hotly anticipated launch of Iceland’s newest startup airline PLAY has officially begun. On the back of the receipt of its Air Operators Certificate last weekend, the airline has today begun selling tickets for its inaugural route between Iceland’s Keflavik Airport and London Stansted.

With the UK’s ‘green list’ in full swing, and Iceland remaining one of only a couple of places that is feasible to travel to right now, PLAY has picked a great first destination in London Stansted. In a statement today, PLAY CEO Birgir Jónsson said,

“It’s brilliant to be able to open up Iceland to UK travellers and offer competitive fares now that international travel has resumed. While the UK market knows Iceland well, the destination has changed a little recently with the (minor) volcanic eruptions in the Reykjanes Peninsula. Certainly, a must-experience for UK travellers.”

PLAY is launching with four times a week flights from Stansted to Iceland taking place on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays. As more aircraft arrive, the airline will look to increase this to daily flights. Departures are timed at a convenient 16:10 in the afternoon, arriving into Keflavik airport at 18:20. Return flights depart Iceland at 15:15, arriving at Stansted at 19:25.

“We are looking forward to providing safe effortless travel, and great value, as we bring low fares to people in the UK.” Jónsson adds.

As well as London Stansted, PLAY has put tickets on sale for six further European destinations. These are Alicante, Tenerife and Barcelona in Spain, Copenhagen in Denmark, Berlin in Germany and Paris in France. Launch dates for each service are as follows:

  • Alicante: July 13th
  • Barcelona: July 16th
  • Berlin: July 2nd
  • Copenhagen: July 22nd
  • Paris: July 15th
  • Tenerife: June 29th

Free tickets for a lucky few

The airline’s launch route to London is taking flight with an unbeatable offer of fares starting at £30 ($42.60). If that wasn’t cheap enough, there are also 1,000 free tickets loaded into the system for London and for its other destinations.

To bag a free trip, travelers simply have to search the dates that are available on their chosen route. If the fare is showing as 0 then it means at least one free seat is available. At the time of writing, there is one free seat on the inaugural from London still available.

There are some catches with the free seat offer, however. If more than one person is booking, then there needs to be that number of free seats available. If there aren’t enough free seats, everyone in the party gets bumped up to the next fare tier. Bookings must also be made for return trips, as free tickets will not be valid on one way flights.

Free tickets are first come, first serve. All flights will be operated by the airline’s A321neo, TF-AEW, which has 192 all-economy seats. The next two A321neos are due to be delivered in July.
