Iberia Is Letting Passengers Choose Its 113th Summer Destination

Must read

Spanish national flag carrier Iberia is asking its followers on social media to decide what its 113th summer 2021 destination will be. In a statement released on Friday, the Madrid-based airline said that its fans on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram would be able to vote on what will become Iberia’s 113th summer route.

The seven destinations that followers can vote on are the Azores, Bastia, Fez, Ljubljana, Rhodes, Thessaloniki, or Zante. The winning route will be announced on April 28, and Iberia will schedule the flights for the entire month of August. The competition comes after Iberia announced on Wednesday that it would be flying to the Indian Ocean tropical resort islands of the Maldives in July.

There are seven possible destinations

Now it says it is time for Iberia’s social media fans to choose where they think the IAG-owned airline should fly next. Of the seven destinations, the one that gets the most votes will be declared the winner.  In addition to helping Iberia decide its 113th summer destination, all participants will enter a draw for two roundtrip tickets to the chosen destination. In total, there will be three raffles, one on Facebook, one on Twitter, and a third on Instagram, with a prize of two roundtrip tickets on each.

To help you decide where Iberia should fly and, more importantly, where you would like to go on vacation this summer, here is a brief description of each of the seven destinations and what they have that would appeal to a tourist.

Destination guide

The Azores

Probably the most exotic of the seven destinations, the Azores are an archipelago of nine volcanic islands in the Atlantic Ocean, located about 1,400 km (870 mi) west of Lisbon. Along with Madiera, the Azores are an autonomous region of Portugal. Often referred to as the Hawaii of the mid-Atlantic, the Azores offer visitors an abundance of outdoor activities and adventures.

Bastia

Located on the French Mediterranean island of Corsica, Bastia is the second busiest passenger port in France after Calais. Tourists visiting Bastia are advised to hire a car and stay at a beach resort such as Calvi or Porto-Vecchio.

Fez

While not a beach town and as well know as Marrakech, Fez is located just north of the Atlas Mountains and is home to the Fes El Bali Medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site dating from the ninth century. Full of back alleyways and imposing stone walls, Fez is the ideal place to discover the delights of Morocco.

Ljubljana

The Slovenian capital of Ljubljana hosts a collection of European architecture hits where baroque, medieval, art nouveau, and even socialist-era realism all live in harmony. Full of museums, parks, and other attractions, Ljubljana is a pedestrian paradise just waiting to be explored.

Rhodes

Basking in the Aegean Sea not all that far from the Turkish coast, Rhodes has long been a favorite Greek Island beach destination for summer tourists. Overflowing with a history dating back to ancient Greece, Rhodes is a perfect destination for people who just want to just lie on the beach or get out and explore.

Thessaloniki

Regarded as being the capital of Northern Greece, Thessaloniki is a buzzing city with a vibrant night scene. Thessaloniki is also the gateway to Halkidiki and the best beaches in Greece. For travelers looking for fun and excitement, Thessaloniki is a good choice.

Zante

Located in the Ionian Sea off the west coast of Greece, Zakynthos, or its Italian name Zante is a popular package holiday destination. Zante offers beachgoers reliable summer sunshine and rustic but delicious food served in seaside tavernas.

The Azores is the standout

Of the above seven destinations, one is a clear winner for me, and that is the Azores. Not only is it the most exotic of the seven destinations, but with new direct flights from the United States, it could soon become overrun with tourists. Iberia is also one of the first airlines to accept the IATA Travel Pass, which it will first use on flights between Madrid and Montevideo.
