The airline will begin flights to San Juan from several mainland destinations and Cancun, alongside service to regional airports Aguadilla and Ponce.
Frontier Airlines is launching a flurry of new flights to Puerto Rico in time for the summer season. The carrier is adding seven domestic links and one international connection beginning in May. The new routes will see Frontier Airlines offering flights to Ponce, Puerto Rico, for the first time, along with additional service to Aguadilla and the island’s capital of San Juan. Once launched, Frontier will serve more routes to Puerto Rico than any other airline.
The new routes bring the Ultra Low-Cost Carrier’s total number of destinations from the US territory to 19, including a newly-announced connection from San Juan to Cancun International Airport in Mexico. The airline cited increased demand among leisure travelers and visiting friends and relatives as vital to expanding its offerings to the famous Caribbean island.
Nonstop service will begin in May to Luis Muñoz Marin International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico (SJU) from six new destinations. Starting May 4th, the carrier will have daily flights to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI), alongside a link to Chicago’s Midway International Airport (MDW), which will run six times a week. A connection to Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE) will operate four times a week, beginning on May 4th.
The following day, Frontier will commence services from San Juan to Detroit’s Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) with four weekly links. The carrier’s new international route to Cancun International Airport (CUN) will launch on May 25th, in time for the US Federal holiday of Memorial Day. Daniel Shurz, senior vice president of commercial operations at Frontier Airlines, highlighted the natural wonders of the Carribian island:
“Puerto Rico is a hugely popular destination for leisure travelers as well as the large population of Puerto Ricans residing in the U.S. who enjoy returning to the island to visit friends and family.
“It is a fantastic vacation destination with stunning beaches, historical sites and the one-of-a-kind El Yunque National Forest. For those with family and friends on the island, we’re offering more options than ever to fly affordably and conveniently between a multitude of major cities and Puerto Rico.”

Frontier will also begin a daily one-stop service in May to San Juan from Denver International Airport (DEN), Simple Flying’s airport of the month. The flights will operate via Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.
Two new regional routes
The carrier is also debuting flights from Mercedita International Airport (PSE) in Ponce, Puerto Rico, from Orlando International Airport (MCO) on May 4th. Flights will operate twice weekly on Tuesday and Thursday. The Florida airport is the carrier’s leading hub for flights to the US territory, and Frontier will face stiff competition on the route from JetBlue and Spirit, which currently serve the city pair. The city on the island’s southern coast has long been served by JetBlue and saw the introduction of the Spirit flight to Orlando in March. Spirit previously served the airport for less than a year in 2008
Frontier will also launch nonstop service to Rafael Hernández International Airport in Aguadilla in the north of Puerto Rico (BQN) from Tampa International Airport (TPA) on May 4th. The 1,175-mile route will be operated using the carrier’s Airbus A320 fleet on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Carlos Mercado, executive director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company, emphasized his excitement for Frontier’s renewed commitment to the regional destinations:
“We thank our Frontier partners for once again demonstrating their commitment to our destination.
“The addition of new nonstop routes between Puerto Rico and seven cities in the United States and Cancun, Mexico, significantly expands the options for visitors to the Island. At the same time, we celebrate the expansion of operations to the Mercedita International Airport in Ponce, which will certainly boost tourism activity and the economy of the southern region.”

The expansion comes as Frontier launches its GoWild! Summer Pass, which offers exclusive access to unlimited flights between the airline’s US and international destinations from May 2nd through Sept. 30th, 2023.
