Eurowings Discover Inaugurates its First Long Haul Service with flights to East Africa

Lufthansa Group’s newest airline, Eurowings Discover, yesterday made its first commercial long-haul flight, inaugurating its flights to Mombasa’s Moi International Airport and then onwards to Zanzibar, Tanzania. After obtaining its Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC) by the German Federal Aviation Authority on June 16, Eurowings will be commencing flight operations under the airline’s own flight code “4Y”.

The airline is the only European airline currently offering scheduled direct flights to Moi Intl. Airport and is taking advantage of the demand for leisure travel at a time when the ongoing coronavirus pandemic is demanding increased adaptability from airlines, particularly new startups.

Eurowings departed from its home base in Frankfurt Airport and was operated by an Airbus A330-200, flown with Captain Wolfgang Raebiger, who is also the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Eurowings Discover.

The new route, which is also a fifth freedom service is scheduled to operate twice weekly, on Wednesdays and Saturdays and for the first time ever, guests onboard the flight have the opportunity to test the product and service of Eurowings Discover, with the aircraft having a total of 270 seats, 22 of which are in Business Class (lie-flat seats). Eurowings Discover aircraft will gradually become equipped with up to 31 Premium Economy Class seats, over the next few months.

The new leisure airline also looks set for more long-haul leisure travel with plans to fly to 3 times per week Punta Cana beginning August 9 and to five times a week to Windhoek, Namibia’s capital and largest city from August 10.

More flights to be reinforced beginning October, 1, when the airline will start operating from Frankfurt to Las Vegas and the paradise island of Mauritius operating three times weekly. More flights to Bridgetown, and Cancún will be added from November 1 while flights to Varadero and Montego Bay in Jamaica to be added from November, 2 and November, 3 respectively to complement its carrier’s winter flight schedule.

Moreover, still in November, Eurowings will also add attractive short and medium-haul routes to its portfolio, with flights from Frankfurt to the Canary Islands of Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Tenerife, as well as flights to Hurghada and Marsa Alam in Egypt, and flights to Marrakech in Morocco.

The airline also plans to be operating short-, medium- and long-haul flights out of the Munich hub from summer 2022 onwards. As a wholly-owned subsidiary of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, the airline draws on the expertise and experience of one of the world’s leading aviation companies including Lufthansa and Swiss Air Lines.
