Could Trump Get An Airport Named After Him?

Must read

While he has still not officially admitted defeat, Donald J. Trump seems to be increasingly contemplating an existence beyond the White House. Sources claim that the President has been making inquiries into the process of having an airport named after him.

The soon-to-be-former President of the United States, Donald Trump, seems to be coming to terms with having lost the election. One clue to this fact is provided by the Daily Beast, which reports that he has been asking his aides and advisors which airport could be named after him when he leaves office.

No president would want an airport with “bad reputation”

Two separate sources have relayed to the media outlet that President Trump has been inquiring about the process of having airports named after previous presidents, including what kind of “paperwork” would be necessary. He has also stated on occasion that no president would want an airport with a “bad reputation” to bear their name.

The White House has made no confirmation that any such conversations have taken place. However, some top Republicans have begun making suggestions as to what airport could potentially be considered.

DJT in Florida?

According to the Sun-Sentinel, Christian Ziegler, the vice-chairman of Florida’s GOP, has suggested Palm Beach International in Florida as a potential candidate. The airport is located mere miles from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort, where he and his wife Melania could relocate after their time in the White House is up.

“How many times has Air Force One flown in there?” Mr Ziegler was quoted as saying regarding the airport, which was suggested could become “the South Florida gateway for the former president’s adoring fans.”

However, a spokesperson for Palm Beach Airport told the Sun-Sentinel that they were yet to be approached with any such inquiries.

Presidential precedent

There are, of course, several airports named after former US presidents.

  • Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport (SPI), Springfield, Illinois
  • Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport (LIT), Little Rock, Arkansas
  • Dickinson Theodore Roosevelt Regional Airport (DIK), Dickinson, North Dakota
  • George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), Houston, Texas
  • Gerald R. Ford International Airport (GRR), Grand Rapids, Michigan
  • John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), Queens, New York
  • Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), Washington, DC
  • Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport (ICT), Wichita, Kansas

As neither Gerald R. Ford nor George H.W. Bush secured reelection (or, in the case of Ford, election), it would not be unprecedented for an airport to be named after a president having only served one term in office.

Whether or not this is a question that should be on any president’s mind, outgoing or not, amidst a raging pandemic and a historic vaccination drive, shall be left without comment.

What do you think, should there be a Donald J. Trump International? Where? Let us know in the comments.
