Earlier today, Avelo Airlines announced that it is expanding service to a third Florida city from Lexington, Kentucky. Avelo will begin its service from Lexington to Fort Myers on November 18.
New Fort Myers route
Avelo Airlines (Avelo) is the only airline offering passengers from the Bluegrass Region nonstop service to Fort Myers and other popular Florida destinations. Before today’s addition of a Fort Myers flight, Avelo had announced service from Blue Grass Airport (LEX) to Orlando International Airport (MCO) and Tampa International Airport (TPA). Services are set to begin on October 19 and November 12, respectively. Andrew Levy, Avelo Airlines Chairman and CEO, said,
“Lexington – we’re at it again! The addition of Fort Myers to our LEX schedule makes visiting Florida even more affordable and convenient. Bluegrass residents can now choose from three sun-soaked nonstop destinations — Orlando, Tampa and Florida’s majestic Southwest Gulf Coast. Say hello to quick, easy and cost-friendly hometown airport access to The Sunshine State when you travel with Avelo.”
Blue Grass Airport President and CEO Eric Frankl said,
“Many in our community visit southwest Florida on a routine basis, so having an airline like Avelo with a large, comfortable aircraft and low fares that provides nonstop service to Fort Myers is awesome! We are very excited about this announcement and would like to thank Avelo Airlines for continuing to add flights for travelers from Lexington and the central Kentucky region.”
The new seasonal service to Fort Myers will operate twice-weekly, beginning on November 18, and will be serviced by Avelo’s Boeing B737 Next Generation aircraft. Below is Avelo’s operational schedule for the new route:
- LEX-RSW 19:20-21:25
- RSW-LEX 16:25-18:30
Recent Avelo news
Late last week, Avelo announced that it would open a base at the Fort Myers airport, making it the airline’s fourth base. Avelo’s first base opened in Burbank, California, an alternative option for Los-Angeles based travelers. Its second base is in Tweed-New Haven, and the third is in Orlando.
Speaking on the opening of the new base, Levy said,
“Based on the success of our initial route between Southern Connecticut [Tweed-New Haven] and Fort Myers, we have announced four additional destinations that will take flight from Fort Myers this fall – creating a meaningful source of new visitors to Southwest Florida. This is just the beginning.”
The four previous destinations mentioned by Levy had already been announced, and today the airline added Lexington. Late this fall, Avelo will have routes from Fort Myers to Binghamton, Kalamazoo, Lansing, Raleigh-Durham, Tweed-New Haven (already operating), and Lexington.
This period of growth is exciting for Avelo, who celebrated one million passengers just last month and is approaching the 10,000 flight mark. Avelo had a special sweepstake in honor of the one million customers.
In 2021, Avelo became the first new airline to take flight in the US in more than a decade. Its unique service includes low fares and an a-la-carte booking style, allowing customers to choose what they value. The airline operates to destinations usually served by regional airlines with smaller aircraft.
