Afghanistan’s flag carrier, Ariana Afghan Airlines, has confirmed it recently purchased an aircraft engine for one of its Boeing 737 aircraft from Serbia, while also acquiring an engine for its Airbus A310 from Turkey. The engines arrived in Kabul on Tuesday on a chartered cargo flight. “The engines, which have undergone comprehensive inspection and assessment in line with international technical standards, were acquired from Turkey and Serbia at a total cost of approximately 4.7 million US dollars. They are scheduled to be installed and commissioned on Ariana Afghan Airlines’ Boeing 737 and Airbus A310 aircraft in the near future by the carrier’s technical team. The upgrades are expected to improve the regularity, safety and overall stability of flight operations”, Ariana said in a statement.
Ariana Afghan Airlines currently operates a fleet of six aircraft, comprising three Airbus A310s, two Boeing 737-400s and one B737-500. One of the carrier’s 737-400s has been grounded for more than a year, while the average age of its Boeing fleet stands at around thirty years.
Despite its ageing fleet and operational constraints, Ariana Afghan Airlines continues to operate domestic services as well as a limited number of international routes, primarily to neighbouring and regional destinations.
