American Airlines will enter the New York-Mexico City market by launching a new route on November 4. It will complement its connectivity to Mexico’s largest city, currently served from Dallas/Fort Worth, Miami, Phoenix, Charlotte, and Los Angeles.
American’s newest route
Beginning on November 4, American Airlines will start a new daily route from Mexico City International Airport (MEX) to New York JFK Airport (JFK). The new route will operate one daily flight on a Boeing 737 aircraft, with a capacity for 172 passengers.
The planned expansion in the Mexican market represents a setback in Colombia, though. Prior to launching this route, American Airlines will cease its daily service from JFK to Bogotá El Dorado International Airport (BOG) on November 3. That month, American will also end its services to Cali (CLO) and Medellin (MDE).
Regarding the new route to Mexico City, José María Giraldo, American’s managing director for Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean, said,
“There is no better way to celebrate 80 years of service to Mexico City than with a new route to New York City, one of the most popular destinations in the US and an important hub for American. Our commitment to Mexico is steadfast, and we are proud to see our operations continue to grow, offering more connectivity and travel options for customers.”

American’s dominance of the market
The US-based carriers heavily dominate the market between Mexico and the United States. According to the latest data, in May, the four Mexican airlines flying to the US held about 25% of the market share in passenger transportation. American Airlines alone has 21.1% of the share.
In 2022, American Airlines has carried 2.8 million passengers in this market, growing by 35% compared to the traffic levels it had in 2019, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.
American Airlines markets 638 weekly flights to Mexico. Some are operated by Envoy Air and SkyWest Airlines.
Dallas Fort Worth is American Airlines’ main gateway to Mexico. It offers 336 weekly flights from this hub to Mexico, followed by Miami (93 weekly flights), Phoenix (75), Charlotte (42), Chicago O’Hare (30), Los Angeles (24), Philadelphia (15), Austin (15), New York (seven), and Boston (one).
