American Airlines Announces Austin Expansion

American Airlines has announced a large network expansion from Austin, Texas nearly doubling the number of destinations the airline serves from the Texas State Capitol. The announcement of eight new destinations, along with some service adjustments on existing routes comes just one day after Alaska Airlines announced it would be adding a flight from Austin to Boise, Idaho.

While recent route announcements have been mainly focused on leisure travel, this announcement from American strays slightly from the typical additions seen during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to AA, the airline states that there is a focus on business travelers returning to the skies. 

Starting on May 6, American will begin service between Austin and three new cities while upgrading service to a fourth. The new cities served from Austin will be Nashville, Tennessee; Las Vegas, Nevada; and New Orleans, Louisiana. The airline will also convert its Saturday-only seasonal service to Orlando, Florida into daily year-round flights.

Starting later in the summer, the airline will begin service between Austin and three East Coast destinations. On June 3, daily flights will begin to Tampa, Florida. Starting on July 2, service will start to Raleigh, North Carolina. Flights to Raleigh will increase to twice daily on Aug. 17 with double-daily flights to Washington Dulles International Airport starting on the same day.

On top of the year-round flights, the carrier will launch two new seasonal routes and extend seasonal service to one already served destination from Austin. Although the carrier already serves San Jose del Cabo, Mexico from Austin, the Saturday-only seasonal service will be extended and run from June 5 until Aug. 14. Both of the new seasonal destinations from Austin will also start on June 5, with Saturday-only service to both Aspen, Colorado and Destin-Fort Walton Beach, Florida. Flights to Destin-Fort Walton Beach will run though Aug. 14 and Aspen flights will run until Sept. 4.

In a press release American’s Vice President of Network Planning, Brian Znotins, said, “Customers have been asking for more service to Austin, and today we’re answering the call. These routes not only provide opportunities for companies to get back to business and for leisure travelers to enjoy the excitement of Austin, but also connect Central Texans with the new leisure destinations they desire.”

On top of the new route additions, the carrier announced it would also be adding four routes from Austin to its codeshare agreement with Alaska Airlines on flights to different West Coast cities. Flights featuring the codeshare will start on May 6 and will be available for sale on March 15. 

The two carriers will codeshare on Alaska-operated flights from Austin to San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, and Portland, Oregon. American stated that it also intends to add its codeshare to Alaska’s newest route between Austin and Boise, Idaho. 

On top of its codeshare with Alaska Airlines, American will offer travelers options with its other partners out of Austin including JetBlue and British Airways. Passengers will have the ability to reach New York’s JFK Airport on American Airlines, but also via its Northeast partner, JetBlue.
