American Airlines and JetBlue Launch Codeshare and Numerous New Routes
American Airlines and JetBlue have officially teamed up in the Northeast United States with the launch of a new schedule and codeshare agreement. The “Northeast Alliance” was launched by the two carriers in July 2020, and was approved by the Department of Transportation in January 2021.
The deal between the two airlines allows for codeshares between the two airlines on over 80 flights and allows for schedules to be enhanced on important markets out of the Northeast U.S. Flights featuring the new codeshare agreement will be seen starting on Feb. 25 and feature domestic markets to start with.
The codeshare not only allows passengers more flexibility but also gives travelers the benefit of traveling on either airline while still earning rewards such as miles.
As part of the agreement, American Airlines has announced numerous new routes out of New York and Boston to complement JetBlue’s already existing route network and to bolster its own Northeast network. On top of 12 new domestic routes starting this summer, American will also launch six new international flights to the Caribbean and South American destinations from New York’s JFK Airport.
The carrier has split expansion between three of the Northeast’s biggest airports. Boston’s Logan International Airport sees the launch of five domestic routes including popular leisure destinations in Jackson Hole, Wyoming and Traverse City, Michigan.

On top of new destinations out of Boston, the Fort Worth-based carrier has added new flights out of New York City’s two biggest airports at LaGuardia Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport. While the carrier has trimmed some of its flights out of New York in the past few years, the new partnership and new routes emphasize a commitment to the city. While domestic additions are focused out of LaGuardia, six new international and one transcontinental domestic flight headline network changes for American.

In a press release, American’s Chief Revenue Officer, Vasu Raja, said, “This is the first step to developing the best customer proposition with the biggest network in New York and Boston.”

All flights announced by American will be for sale starting Feb. 22 on the carrier’s website.
JetBlue also announced significant network expansion out of the New York City area with new flights out of Newark International Airport, New York’s LaGuardia Airport and New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport. The carrier’s flights all start in early July and are focused on leisure-based destinations across the United States, Caribbean, and South America. Newark, which has been a rapidly expanding focus city for the New York-based airlines sees the largest growth with nine additional destinations added.

JetBlue’s head of revenue and planning, Scott Laurence, said, “Our alliance with American opens the door for JetBlue to successfully enter into new markets, introducing more choices and our award-winning service and low fares to more customers.”
All new JetBlue flights will be on sale starting Feb. 23. Flights to all destinations with the exception of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket will be operated by the carrier’s fleet of Airbus A320 family of aircraft. Flights to the two island destinations in Massachusetts will be operated by Embraer E190 aircraft.
