Must read

All Nippon Airways (ANA) is set to operate its Boeing 777 freighter to Los Angeles. Out of their base at Tokyo Narita Airport, the airline cargo division’s two 777Fs have been flying quite frequently over the past few months, but neither has touched down at LAX. The first flight to Los Angeles will take place on April 23rd.

“A number of factors have led to increased demand for cargo flights connecting Japan and North America…We are proud to have a fleet of capable aircraft that is able to meet the demand and support global supply chains in operation at this critical time.” -Toshiaki Toyama, Executive Vice President of ANA and President of ANA Cargo via Aviation Pros

What we know so far

According to Air Cargo News, ANA Cargo is deploying its larger 777Fs on the route due to an increased level of demand. The carrier has been using its 767Fs on this Narita-Los Angeles route but is experiencing sufficient demand to increase capacity. The airline notes that its relatively new 777Fs offer approximately 100 tons of capacity- twice that of the Boeing 767Fs currently used for Los Angeles service.

Demand reportedly includes automobile parts from Japan and perishables to Japan from North America. The airline also added that during March 2021, it plans to operate a total of 2,349 cargo flights- which is a monthly record high for the carrier.

For anyone hoping to transport some extra-large freight between the two cities – or just catch a glimpse of these jets on the US West Coast, the first flight is scheduled for April 23rd.

About ANA Cargo and its 777 freighters

ANA Cargo, a division of ANA, took delivery of two brand new 777Fs in May and June 2019. These are registered as JA771F and JA772F, respectively. Relatively new aircraft at just 1.8 and 2.4 years old, the aircraft have been busy over the past year.

The airline has been using these aircraft on a fairly limited selection of routes. Destinations have been so far limited to Shanghai, Chicago, Frankfurt, and Bangkok. Both jets have been flying almost every single day to and from their home at Tokyo Narita Airport.

ANA owns 11 dedicated freighters. Two of these are Boeing 777 Freighters, while the remaining nine are 767 Freighters). Photo: ANA

On its website, ANA Cargo notes that its 777 freighters are capable of transporting aircraft engines, gas turbines, semiconductor manufacturing equipment, MRI equipment, racehorses, and SUV vehicles.

ANA Cargo markets the jets as “an optimal solution” for increased cargo demand volumes caused by “economic growth in developing countries, as well as for the advanced supply chain of the global era.”
