Alitalia has announced plans to increase its flight schedule in August and September with the resumption of some medium and long-haul flights. The carrier said on July 28th that from September, it would be returning to Buenos Aires as well as select destinations in Asia and Africa.
Alitalia returns to Buenos Aires
With projections for medium and long-haul international travel to increase by 7% on scheduled flights from September, Italian carrier Alitalia is ramping up its operations. Earlier this week, the airline detailed significant increases to its network with the resumption of medium and long-haul to some destinations in Asia, South America, and Africa.
Alitalia will be flying to Buenos Aires next month from Rome Fiumicino. The route will take place four times a week and will be increased in October to six times per week. Also, the airline will also return to the following destinations from Rome Fiumicino:
- Algiers in Algeria six times a week;
- Tel Aviv in Israel four times a week; and
- Tokyo Haneda in Japan.
These schedule additions are part of a broader update to Alitalia’s network increases for September.
September route updates for Alitalia
Many services in September will see frequency increases, including six destinations from Rome. Passengers will take advantage of additional flights to Brussels, Cairo, Geneva, Nice, Tunis, and Zurich next month. From Rome, there will also be further domestic service frequency updates.
Other cities in Italy will see service increases and route resumptions. In Milan Linate, a service to Frankfurt will resume with 14 flights offered per week. In addition, there will be more flights on routes between Milan Linate and Brussels, Paris, and London Heathrow.
Again, in Milan Malpensa, a route to New York will commence again six times per week.
While Alitalia is planning drastic updates to its schedule for September, it is actually in October that the most positive recovery will happen. During that month, the medium and long-haul international sector is expected to grow by 29%, and Alitalia is prepared to meet incoming customer demand.
October sees a 29% increase in international long-haul demand
Alitalia has managed to bring back nearly half of its pre-COVID-19 planned schedule. In a statement on its website, the airline said,
“[We] will operate in October almost 1,630 services per week to 45 airports, including 19 domestic airports, thus increasing [our] activity at 46% of what was planned for this month before the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.”
In October, the airline will return to Dusseldorf 24 times per week and Paris Orly 14 times per week from Milan. Milan Linate will also increase its services to Amsterdam and Frankfurt up to 24 times per week.
In Rome, further increases are planned. Alitalia will operate 1,100 flights to 42 destinations worldwide. These include frequency increases in Tel Aviv to between four and 10 services per week as well as:
- Amsterdam in the Netherlands, between 14 and 24 services per week;
- Tirana in Albania, between 14 and 20 times per week; and
- Geneva in Switzerland, between 20 and 28 times per week.
