Walmart says it has rolled out artificial intelligence and automated technology across its global supply chain, ranging from predictive AI that sorts fresh produce in Costa Rica, to systems in Mexico City that automatically reroute goods away from facilities that have overstocked inventories.

In a July 17 release, Walmart detailed how it is beginning to scale up the use of AI across continents, spanning North and South America, and Southeast Asia. That includes predictive warehouse and transportation management systems in Coyol, Costa Rica that can map the best delivery routes for perishable produce; AI technology that coordinates orders and flag anomalies in Calgary, Alberta; and so-called “self-healing inventory” systems that directs products to Mexico City warehouses that need them most.

“At this scale, the only way to move faster is to move smarter,” said Walmart International chief technology officer Vinod Bidarkoppa. “We’re creating systems that turn real-time signals into real-time action, freeing up associates and delivering for customers.”

The big box retailer says that it’s also using generative AI to comb through social media and sales data to identify the products customers in certain regions want most, as well as agentic AI that makes it so employees at stores can analyze shipments and determine in real-time whether they may have been inadvertently shorted any items in a delivery.

Walmart has been investing in automated technology across its fulfillment network for the better part of a year. In July 2024, the company announced plans to open five automated distribution centers to manage fresh food for its online grocery business across the U.S. The retailer also rolled out an initiative in June 2025 to expand its drone delivery services to 100 additional stores across Houston, Tampa, Orlando, Atlanta and Charlotte.
