New Delhi : In a major healthcare reform, President Droupadi Murmu while addressing the Budget season announced that six crore senior citizens aged 70 and above will be covered under the Ayushman Bharat Scheme.
“The initiative aims to provide financial protection and improve healthcare access for India’s elderly population, ensuring they receive essential medical support without financial strain,” she said
The government public health insurance scheme aims to benefit approximately 4.5 Crore families with six crore senior citizens with 5 Lakh rupees free health insurance cover on a family basis.
Ayushman Bharat, a flagship scheme of Government of India, was launched as recommended by the National Health Policy 2017, to achieve the vision of Universal Health Coverage (UHC). This initiative has been designed to meet Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and its underlining commitment, which is to “leave no one behind.”
Responding to a long-pending demand in September 2024, the Union Cabinet approved health coverage to all senior citizens of the age 70 years and above irrespective of income under Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY).
