Must read

The Mexican carrier Aeromexico has fully rebounded from the COVID-19 pandemic in terms of carried passengers. In June, the airline carried 1.95 million passengers, an 11% increase compared to June 2019, fueled by a robust domestic bounce back and good international levels. Let’s investigate further.

Aeromexico’s traffic levels

Despite some obvious challenges, the Mexican aviation industry seems to have fully rebounded from the COVID-19 crisis. Aeromexico, which for months remained below its pre-pandemic traffic levels, has now fully recovered and even grown compared to the number of passengers it was carrying in 2019.

Last month, Aeromexico carried 1.95 million passengers (1.35 million domestic and 600,000 international travelers). That’s an 11% growth compared to the 1.75 million passengers the airline had in June 2019, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Domestically, the airline has grown by 27%, fueled by strong demand for travel within Mexico. Internationally, Aeromexico remains 13% below 2019 levels.

The airline’s load factor throughout June was 84.8%. Surprisingly, Aeromexico’s international flights were more packed than the domestic, reaching an 85.9% load factor versus an 83% domestic load factor.

How has Aeromexico fared in the first half of the year?

The year’s first half has been a good one for the Mexican aviation industry. We have seen Volaris and Viva Aerobus posting all-time records in traffic numbers, and now Aeromexico seems to be fully rebounding.

Aeromexico carried 9.69 million travelers between January and June 2022. These numbers, although a 36% increase compared to 2021, are still slightly below 2019, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Aeromexico has recovered about 94% of its pre-pandemic traffic levels.

At the beginning of the year, Aeromexico faced a setback when the Omicron variant forced the airline to cancel several flights.

Domestically, Aeromexico has carried 6.78 million travelers in the year. That’s a 5% increase compared to 2019 levels.

Internationally, Aeromexico has had 2.91 million travelers in the year. The airline is still 25% below pre-pandemic traffic levels.

In the coming weeks, Aeromexico should release its second-quarter financial results, showing the most important aspect of the airline’s recovery. Last quarter, it had a net loss of around 3.09 billion Mexican pesos (around US$150 million).

Nonetheless, the airline emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy which was brilliant news for the SkyTeam member.

How about the other Mexican airlines?

Both Volaris and Viva Aerobus are posting their best traffic numbers in their history this year.

Volaris, so far, has carried 36.3% more passengers than in 2021. The ultra-low-cost airline has carried 14.2 million passengers. Its load factor throughout the first half of the year has been 84.0% (domestically, 86.8%, and internationally 77.6%).

Meanwhile, Viva Aerobus has carried 9.43 million passengers in 2022. That’s a 74.9% increase compared to 2019 and a 46.5% increase compared to 2021.

Viva Aerobus’ load factor has been 85.9% (88.7% domestically and 74.6% internationally).

By the end of the year, the Mexican aviation industry could fully recover from the pandemic and even grow.
