Despite the amount of competition, transatlantic business class fares can still be some of the most expensive on the market. However, now and then, you can strike gold by flying a more unconventional route. This is the case on TAP Portugal, whose July flights from Boston to Madrid via Ponta Delgada and Lisbon currently come in at around just $700!
The route
As also noted by Luxury Flight Club, adding a stop in Ponta Delgada dramatically decreases the cost of transatlantic travel with TAP Portugal. Ponta Delgada is the primary airport for the Azores, a collection of Portuguese islands in the eastern Atlantic Ocean.
As such, flying a three-legged Boston-Ponta Delgada-Lisbon-Madrid itinerary this summer will see business class fares fall well below the norm. However, it is important to note that the return leg features a 14-hour overnight layover in the Portuguese capital.

Examples of Saturday-Friday stays throughout June and July can be found at the following Skyscanner links. The first week is currently $700, with the remainder coming in at $718.
- Saturday, June 26th – Friday, July 2nd
- Saturday, July 3rd – Friday, July 9th
- Saturday, July 10th – Friday, July 16th
- Saturday, July 17th – Friday, July 23rd
- Saturday, July 24th – Friday, July 30th
TAP’s website indicates that an Airbus A321neo operates the Boston-Ponta Delgada leg. However, it is unclear whether that would be the LR variant, with flatbed business class seats. The standard A321neo in TAP’s fleet features European-style short-haul business class, so this is an aspect to be aware of, and presumably a factor in the low prices.
