Kim Kardashian must be spitting chips. The social media heavy hitter has come in at the tail end of the latest private jet rich list. Stratos Jet Charters has released their list of the 20 biggest spenders on private jet travel, and Ms Kardashian, bless her, barely scraped in at number 20, spending just US$730,000 on private jet travel in a single year.
At the other end, her sometime buddy Donald Trump topped the list. The Stratos Jets big spender list says he spends $9,250,000 annually getting around on Air Force One. However, it’s worth asking whether that’s his spend or the US taxpayer’s spend.
Stratos Jets says living large and running around in a private jet can cost up to $29,500 per hour. And that’s before further variable costs such as maintenance (parts and labor), engine reserves, fuel, auxiliary power units if, and miscellaneous expenses including crew travel, catering and cabin supplies, landing, and parking fees.
Politicians are the biggest spenders on private jet travel. Trailing Mr Trump, Vladimir Putin claims the number two spot with a $5,300,000 annual spend. He gets about in an IL-96-300PU. In number three spot is Angela Merkel, spending $4,600,000. She was using an Airbus A340-313X VIP plane but, as Simple Flying reported a couple of months ago, upgraded to an A350 nicknamed Merkel One.
Boris Johnson being a bit of a skinflint when it comes to private jets
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is rather letting the side down. He only spends $2,700,000 annually on private jet travel, tooling around in an A330. For that mediocre spending effort, he takes eighth place.
Mr Johnson is nicely wedged between Roman Abramovich, owner of the Chelsea soccer club, and John Travolta, owner of a vintage Boeing 707.
Kylie Jenner, who the kids tell me is related to Kim Kardashian, owns a Bombardier Global 7500. Nice! She spends $1,450,000 avoiding flying commercial.

The Kardashian/Jenner version of public transport
Poor Kim, she’s only got a mid-sized jet too. It’s enough to encourage a girl to retire to decorous obscurity. Meanwhile, Stratos published this list because they say it’s cheaper to charter one of their planes than to run your own.
“When it comes to owning versus chartering a private jet, the results are pretty shocking,” they told Simple Flying. Referring back to Ms Kardashian, they said;
“Aside from the private Boeing-747 her and husband Kanye West rented for a long-haul flight – which costs roughly $200,000 per hour – Kim Kardashian only travels on chartered private jets. The cost of chartering a private jet each year (depending on flying hours) can be anywhere between $300,000 – $730,000. That may seem expensive, but compared to her sister, Kylie Jenner, it’s practically pennies.
“Kylie is the proud owner of a Bombardier Global 7500, costing between $50 – 70 million dollars. This jet can rack up a running cost of anywhere between $1,450,000 – $2,500,000 per year, depending on flight hours.
“Chartering a private jet can be just as luxurious and a lot easier on the bank account.”
