Starting yesterday, Delta Air Lines opened its reservation system for its new non-stop flight from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to Palm Springs International Airport (PSP). The flights between Los Angeles and Palm Springs will commence on November 20, 2020. Delta partner SkyWest Airlines will operate the once-daily service using one of its 189 Embraer ERJ-175 regional jets.
The Brazilian-built aircraft can accommodate 70 passengers in three cabin classes. The first class cabin has 12 seats in a 1+2 configuration while Delta Comfort offers 20 seats in a 2+2 configuration. The economy class seats on SkyWest’s Embraer ERJ-175s include 38 seats in a 2+2 layout.
Flight times
SkyWest Airlines flight number DL-3812 will depart Los Angeles at 19:45 and arrive in Palm Springs at 20:35. The return flight, SkyWest Airlines flight number DL-3795, will leave Palm Springs at 07:15 and arrive back in Los Angeles at 08:08.
The Atlanta -headquartered airline used to fly from Los Angeles to Palm Springs as Delta Connect up until April 1999. During the next decade, the short flight was operated as a codeshare with American Eagle. On the route, Delta will be competing with Chicago-based United Airlines who offer a daily service aboard a SkyWest CRJ200.
Boutique Air daily flights to PSP and PHX from LAX
As aviation website, Routesonline reported last week, San Francisco-based Boutique Air is also planning to offer flights between Los Angeles and Palm Springs, starting on October 10.
Along with the Los Angeles to Palm springs route Boutique Air also plans to offer flights between Palm Springs and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX). Both flights will be flown using a single-engine Pilatus PC-12 turboprop with room for seven passengers.
According to NBC Palm Springs, Boutique spokeswoman Teresa Mesman told City News Service the following about the flights:
“We have been looking to Palm Springs for a while now. Our clients in Los Angeles and Phoenix had been requesting it.”
Having begun life as an aviation technology company in 2007, the northern California company decided to become a small airline. Boutique Air’s fleet consists of 29 Swiss-built Pilatus PC-12s and six American-made Beechcraft King Air 350s.
JetBlue and Southwest want to fly to PSP
Along with the airlines mentioned above, low-cost carrier JetBlue announced that it would launch a seasonal non-stop flight between Palm Springs and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida (FLL) later in the year. The route is just one of 24 leisure destinations where JetBlue anticipates an increase in demand for leisure travel. Texas-based Southwest Airlines is also betting big on Palm Springs, saying it will introduce flights to both Palm Springs and Miami, pending government approval.
With the coronavirus pandemic hitting international travel, it would appear that United States carriers are looking to increase their presence in domestic leisure locations. Palm Springs has long been a favorite destination for golfers and is home to California’s most beautiful courses.
