Kolhapur: Two patients undergoing treatment for Guillain-BarrĂ© Syndrome died on Saturday at Kolhapur’s CPR Hospital. Within a week, three people have now died of GBS-linked complications at the govt-run unit. Last Thursday, a 60-year-old woman had passed away at the hospital, while undergoing treatment for the rare neurological disorder that causes muscle weakness and paralysis.

Of the two patients who died on Saturday, one was a 65-year-old resident of Kolhapur city’s Shahu Mill area. The other was a 64-year-old resident of Chikodi in Karnataka, who was brought to CPR hospital for treatment. Both men had history of blood pressure and diabetes, said Dr Satyawan More, dean of the hospital.

“By the time they were brought in, their symptoms had progressed significantly. We started them on immunoglobulin therapy and provided ventilator support. However, there was little chance of survival. We carried out nerve conduction tests for both patients. Currently, we have five patients undergoing treatment for GBS at the hospital. They are all stable,” Dr More said.

Kolhapur health authorities said they will now investigate the Shahu Mill neighbourhood to determine what caused GBS in the 65-year-old resident. “We will be testing water samples too. More details will also be sought from CPR hospital. But most of the GBS patients admitted in the city are from rural areas,” said Prakash Pavara, Kolhapur Municipal Corporation’s chief health officer.

Miraj town, an hour away from Kolhapur city, has also reported GBS casualties. A 62-year-old woman from Solapur’s Sangola region and a 14-year-old boy from Hukkeri in Karnataka died during treatment at Miraj GMCH. The boy died on Wednesday and the woman on Friday.

The four casualties in Kolhapur and Miraj have not been linked to the GBS outbreak in Pune city where on Sunday, for the first time since cases began to surge on Jan 5, no new cases or deaths were reported over a 24-hour period.

So far, Pune has registered 208 GBS cases. There have been eight deaths. As of Sunday, 131 people have been discharged, but 42 are in intensive care with 21 on ventilator support.
